| Kelps are dominant primary producers in temperate coastal ecosystems. Large amounts of kelp biomass can be exported to the seafloor during the algal growth cycle or following storms, creating new ecological niches for the associated microbiota. Here, we investigated the bacterial community associated with the kelp Laminaria hyperborea during its accumulation and degradation on the seafloor. Kelp tissue, seawater and sediment were sampled during a six‐month in situ experiment simulating kelp detritus accumulation. | Le site des Caps est une zone littorale bien particulière, bordure française du goulet du Pas-de-Calais, à la fois rétrécissement géographique important entre la France et l'Angleterre, et limite entre la Manche Orientale et le sud de la Mer du Nord. Une zone d'extraction de granulats marins a été exploitée entre 1971 et 1980 au large de ce site. Cette exploitation a été arrêtée en 1982 par arrêté préfectoral pour des raisons d'atteinte à l'environnement et d'entrave à la pêche. | The production of calcium carbonate by a dense Ophiothrix fragilis population was calculated in order to investigate its role in the carbon budget of a temperate coastal ecosystem (Dover Strait, eastern English Channel). Production, calculated using monthly data of population density, demographic structure and a size/CaCO3 conversion, was 682 g CaCO3 m(-2) yr(-1). Assuming that the molar ratio of CO2 released to CaCO3 precipitated varied with temperature between 0.66 and 0.73, this production would result in the release of 4.8 mol CO2 m(-2) yr(-1). This calculation reinforces the suggestion that this coastal system is a source of CO2 to the atmosphere. |

| Worldwide kelp forests have been the focus of several studies concerning ecosystems dysfunction in the past decades. Multifactorial kelp threats have been described and include deforestation due to human impact, cascading effects and climate change. Here, we compared community and trophic structure in two contrasting kelp forests off the coasts of Brittany. | From 1999 to 2005, studies carried out in the frame of regional and national French programs aimed to determine whether the Phaeocystis globosa bloom affected the intertidal benthic communities of the French coast of the eastern English Channel in terms of composition and/or functioning.
